LISA ZIEGLER, GARDENER'S WORKSHOP

lisa mason ziegler is a cut-flower farmer, author, and nationally recognized speaker on cut-flower gardening. lisa has been farming since 1998; her urban three-acre farm produces thousands of stems of flowers each week in season. she has sold her flowers to florists, colonial williamsburg, supermarkets, through her csa programs and at farmer’s markets. in 2005 lisa launched a mail-order catalog and online garden shop business, the gardener’s workshop, offering the gardening tools, seeds, and supplies she uses in her own gardens. Lisa’s books cool flowers and the easy cut-flower garden are available on her site and where books are sold. in season, lisa gathers experiences from day-to-day life on her farm. during the winter months she travels about speaking and teaching on this good life of farming and growing flowers.

michael genovese is a second generation farmer from oxford, michigan, a small town in northern oakland county. he has been involved in agriculture his entire life, growing up on a christmas tree farm, participating in 4h and serving on the board of directors for oakland county farm bureau for 10
years representing agriculture in lansing and washington d.c.
in 2011 michael received a gift of a few dahlia tubers from the largest dahlia grower in michigan, janet brondyke. as he grew those dahlias, his passion for these flowers grew. knowing that he wanted to have a career in agriculture, he called janet and asked to work with her on her operation, hamilton dahlia farm. with this experience michael started summer dreams farm in 2015 growing 5,500 dahlias. now in his second year, michael has expanded to an acre planted with around 20,000 dahlia plants.

in 2006, journalist debra prinzing fell down what she calls "a rabbit hole filled with cut flowers." at the time, she had been covering small business and home and garden topics for nearly 20 years.in 2006, journalist debra prinzing fell down what she calls "a rabbit hole filled with cut flowers." at the time, she had been covering small business and home and garden topics for nearly 20 years. it happened gradually, but by 2010, she had pivoted professionally to documenting the stories of domestic flower farms and their clients - floral designers whose artisan approach paralleled the farm-to-table culinary scene. interviewing hundreds of floral entrepreneurs has returned debra to her business reporting and design writing roots. these paired interests have inspired two books -- the 50 mile bouquet in 2012 and slow flowers in 2013 -- and countless articles in newspapers, magazines, blogs and her popular slow flowers podcast. like many creatives, debra's personal journey to launch slow flowers llc took an organic path. today, there are three slow flowers-branded media channels, each of which brings leading voices of the american grown floral community to audiences hungry to gain knowledge about sustainable flower farming and floral design. at the heart is slowflowers.com, the free, nationwide online directory to domestic and local flowers, and the farms, shops, studios and florists who supply those blooms. debra will share the slow flowers story as she documents the cultural shift taking place among conscious consumers. included in her presentation, debra will highlight case studies of successful slow flowers members along all points of the distribution pipeline -- from farm to wholesaler to retailer to designer. in doing so, she'll inspire you to rethink your own floral narrative with specific tools and ideas for becoming a distinctive voice in your marketplace.
